How "who owes whom" is calculated

Splitting expenses among several people seems simple until everyone pays for different things. One books the Airbnb, another buys the groceries, another gets the tickets… and by the end of the trip nobody knows who owes what. The right way to solve it is to work out each person’s net balance: what they paid minus their fair share of the total.

Picture a trip with 4 friends and $800 of expenses. Each person’s share is $200 ($800 ÷ 4). If Ana paid $500, her balance is +$300 (she’s owed). If Luis paid nothing, his balance is −$200 (he owes). Our calculator does this for every expense and then finds the minimum number of payments to settle the group, so nobody has to make three transfers when one will do.

What about tips or unequal splits?

To split a bill with a tip — a dinner, say — use Quick split: enter the total, the number of people and the tip percentage, and you’ll see how much each person pays with the tip included. If someone in your group should pay more than others (by room, by income, or because not everyone joins every expense), the practical fix is an app that remembers those rules and the history: Lurio splits by percentage, by shares or by fixed amounts and recalculates the balance automatically every time an expense is added.

This calculator is perfect for a one-off. If you share expenses month after month — a couple, a flat, or a travel group that meets up again — re-entering everything each time gets old fast. That’s where a shared-expense app saves the work.

Frequently asked questions

How do you split expenses for a trip or group?

Add each expense with its amount and who paid it. The calculator splits every expense equally across the whole group, works out each person’s balance (what they paid minus their fair share), and shows the minimum number of payments needed so everyone is settled up.

Can I split expenses unequally?

This calculator splits equally, which covers most dinners, trips and shared flats. If someone should pay more than others — by percentage, fixed amounts or custom shares — the Lurio app handles it automatically and keeps the group’s history.

How do I add a tip when splitting a bill?

In the “Quick split” mode, enter the tip percentage and the calculator adds it to the total before dividing, showing how much each person pays with the tip included.

Is it free and do I need to sign up?

The calculator is 100% free and runs in your browser — no sign-up, nothing to install. If you want to track a group’s expenses month after month, settle up with a single payment and scan receipts, you can create a free Lurio account.

Is my data saved?

No. Calculations happen on your own device and nothing is sent to a server. Reload the page and you start fresh.
